What is the difference between High Performance Concrete and GFRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete)?
High Performance Concrete is based on traditional concrete. By giving it modern techniques and technologies to create a superior high performance concrete product. It gets its very high strength by adding flyash, silica fume, fibers, and the proper gradation of sand and rock aggregate to cement with a very low water content. We also use admixtures that help the concrete to be more flowable and harden quicker. The cement base, either white or grey, help in the color production. GFRC is made by layering 2 parts. The facemix is sprayed into the form and contains decorative aggregate, cement, flyash, fine sand and polymers. A backup is then applied and it contains cement, flyash, fibers, sand and polymers. No rock aggregate is used in this mix. A polymer is used to aid in curing.
What do you make out of concrete?
We primarily make concrete wall tile/veneer and countertops. We also make anything from concrete fireplace surrounds, to integral sinks, to game tables, to a delicate flower vase. These are just some of the things we have made out of concrete. The possibilities are almost endless.
Do you install the tile/veneer?
Most installations are done by a tile setter. Our lightweight concrete tiles and veneer are easily field cut with a diamond blade tile cutter.
Where can concrete tile/veneer be used?
Concrete tile and veneer can be used anywhere a ceramic tile can be used. Interior and exterior applications.
Do you ship your tile/veneer?
Yes we do. Our lightweight concrete tiles and veneer can be crated and shipped anywhere.
How thick are concrete countertops and will my base cabinets be able to carry them?
Our standard thickness is 1 ½”. In GFRC our standard thickness is ¾” with thicker edges for visual appearance. Base cabinets are designed to hold any countertop material.
What is the timeframe to have concrete countertops measured, created and installed?
Our current workload and complexity of your project have influence over that. However; usually a kitchen is produced in ~3-4 weeks from template.
Do you often put embeds in the countertops?
We can put embeds of mementos or recesses for tile accent. Holes and switches can also be cast into the surface. There is a minimal upcharge to cover some holes, embeds, and recesses.
Are countertops cast face up or face-down in your studio or my home?
We cast our countertops in our studio for quality control. Most of our casts are face-down, casting face down gives the piece the smoothest finish with the most contemporary look. Casting face up is the technique we use when creating our old world finish.
How do you color and seal concrete?
Most of our standard colors are achieved by using integral pigments. We also use some topical dyes to color the surface. We use a high tech, high performance topical sealer on our concrete.
Is there an additional cost for producing a custom color for my concrete countertops?
We have a standard color library in addition to many previous custom matches. If we don’t have the color you are looking for we can create a custom color match, as closely as possible, for a fee of $75. For an exact match involving a lab the fee would be $300.
Will concrete countertops stain?
Concrete can stain, primarily if acids or oil spills are left on the counter they can penetrate the seal and leave a stain. To help mitigate this, we use the highest quality sealer available on the market.
Concrete’s appearance may change over time. Quality made concrete will change slower, however change in everything is inevitable. The surface may take on a more mature look. Like all natural things concrete will take on characteristics of its environment. The surface finish can be renewed by stripping away the seal and reapplying new sealer, however this will be removing its history as well.
How do I care for my concrete countertops?
Wash with soap and water or any nonabrasive cleaner. We like green products. To prevent cuts in the sealer use a cutting board with knives and trivets with hot pots and pans. You can purchase one of our concrete trivets in our (store).
Will my concrete countertops crack?
Hairline cracks and fissures are inherent to concrete. They do not affect the integrity of the piece. Structural cracks are just that and will affect the integrity of the piece. We offer a 10 year warranty on structural cracks, we will repair or replace.
